the imaginary invalid

<the imaginary invalid> is the last of many plays written by moliere. the original name is <le malade imaginaire> and it reflects moliere’s vision in a moment near his death – if illness and age cannot be defeated by medicine, than they can be overcome by theatre.

the play is absolutely brilliant! i had more fun that at any other i’ve ever seen. the plot is ingenious, the script – intelligent, overloaded with humour. each character is extremely realistic, typical, and yet always surprising. my personal favourite was the hypochondriac himself – a crazy old man counting medical bills and enemas, who wants to marry his daughter to a doctor (against her will, of course), because he only wants in his house the people he needs. the so called invalid is completely clueless about anything happening around him, which makes him likeable at the very least.

it’s an excellent play, and i strongly recommend it to whoever enjoys an evening full of laughter.

it’s a play i’ve recently seen at bulandra theatre, in bucharest. although i have to admit, i mostly enjoy comedies, this drama really shocked me in a pleasant way. it’s the drama experienced by a family, involving craziness, rapes, sacrifice and eventually murder. i found it a bit complicated, probably not suitable for a first date thing.

however, throughout the development of the plot, things started to make sense and to penetrate my mind. it was actually absorbing. each word thrown out was full of meaning, full of emotion and passion. the actors are stunning – their performances, spectacular. but what made this play completely worthwhile, from where i stand, was the final sound. the eldest child of the family, an early-matured teenager gave me a shiver by a deadly laughter. it sort of made the whole play stand in a different light. it was thought-provoking and somehow scary. if you have the chance, make sure you go see it.

made in romania

there’s an old phrase that says about romania <what a great country! too bad it’s inhabited…> and how extraordinary true that is!!

i went to cluj the other weekend, for the first time. i had heard a great deal about it – wonderful sight, “dealul feleacului”…apparently some sort of a touristic city. but the romanian tag hit me from the very beginning. first of all, despite the long trip to the hotel, i couldn’t tell any difference between, let’s say, a school or a museum or a simple apartment building. i could, however, notice the big sign saying <cemetery>. this town is laid on the right and left sides of the small somes, and still the river is literally treated with the back. all buildings are facing away from the river, and it’s shores have a very clearly stated usage – garbage bag. seriously, passing a bridge over somes is like taking a trip to a dirt camp! another typical behaviour – the newest mall has about 2500 parking spaces, half of them empty. but don’t dare to imagine there are no illegaly parked cars. no way. the first 2-3 rows of cars are packed up, mainly because each self-appreciating driver is convinced of him being entitled to a 1-minute-away-from-the-door spot.

an upside, though? one way streets. cluj is one of the very few cities in romania that seems to have realised that a little detour is less time consuming than endless queues on both ways streets. however…interesting enough for a one time experience.

personality

i live in a world full of “I”-s. each and everyone of those i know is self-centred, at least at a certain level. but what really made me think was the over-estimated opinion some may have regarding their personality. you see, some of my classmates tend to think of me as being that nerd that has a passion for studying and pleasing teachers. they’re better than me in so many ways, i cannot even count them. and the first issue is that they do have this weird characteristic i keep mentioning, while i don’t. but here comes the funniest part: how come i see it completely in reverse?

i notice them wondering around, in groups. they smoke together, they talk dirty together, act cool and jerk others around together. yet, i’ve never seen any of them acting like this on their own. even more, try asking one of them why he/she is the way they are. they’ll just say “it’s the trend, it’s how these things work.” . on the other side of the hand, i’ve never had a problem with being the freakthat reads and learns. i enjoy finding out new stuff every day, and i enjoy passing it over to my subconscious in order to be stored. i never thought it’s anyone’s problem but mine the way i choose to be, without discussing right now whether it’s the right way or not.

and now i come to ask. who is it who lacks personality. yes, they do have nerve, they ignore other’s opinions, but only if you don’t separate them- is that what personality is really about?
